Green Belts; The Symbol Of Growth
Green belt is one of the first pivotal belts where parental support is first becomes extremely important. As the fourth belt in the program, the Green Belt is where students begin to feel discouraged as the techniques require more time and practice to master, which is why being able to relay these resources to your student is imperative. For our green belts we practice Taegeuk Oh Jang and the Flying Front Kick and for our High Green Belts, we practice Taegeuk Yook Jang and the Axe Kick.
The Green Belt Form; Taegeuk Oh Jang: "The Wind"
Keeping in mind the element of wind while performing this form can be a helpful mnemonic device because of the various combinations of motion and techniques used. We encourage our students to learn and practice this form in 3 parts so that they don't feel overwhelmed by the changing footing and blocks used in the different directions.
The new main techniques introduced in this form include:
- Hammerfist Strike
- Inward Elbow Strike
- Elbow Strike
Green Belt Board Breaking Technique; Flying Front Kick
The flying front kick is a modern twist on the front kick in which the student can close in a distance while still maintaining a precise front kick. It is much more practical in a sparring scenario than a traditional front kick and has proven to be an more effective self defense technique than the standard push kick and front kick.

Taegeuk Yook Jang: "The Water"
Where Taegeuk Oh Jang is about being quick and adaptive like the wind, Taegeuk Yook Jang emphasizes strength and depth of motion, like the ocean. In the middle of the form there is a "stop move" that is dedicated to re-centering their energy and focusing on finishing the rest of the form with intention.
The main new techniques introduced in this form include:
- Roundhouse Kick
- Palmheel Block
- Double Knifehand Block
- Opening Block
High Green Belt Board Breaking Technique; Axe Kick
The Axe Kick, executed correctly and carefully, is one of the most powerful kicks our students learn. It requires great caution and control in order to prevent harm to our students so we take extra time each class to ensure our students safety and success while they learn this board-breaking technique. The trick to this kick is using the heel and we teach our student to focus the force of their heel in the center of the board.
